The world's largest solar power plant to be built in the UAE

The ruler of Dubai announced the signing of a contract to build the world's largest solar power plant.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE vice president and ruler of Dubai, launched the project for the world's largest concentrated solar energy (CSP) power plant. Its construction is consistent with the emirate’s desire by 2050 to provide 75 percent of its energy with renewable sources.

The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) said Saturday that Acwa Power from Saudi Arabia and Shanghai Power from China were selected to expand the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Complex. The production capacity will be 700 megawatts. The project involves the construction of the world's tallest collector tower with a height of 260 meters.

"The implementation of the largest CSP power plant in the world demonstrates the commitment of the UAE leadership to the production of clean and renewable energy and will strengthen our place among the most advanced countries in this industry," said Sheikh Mohammed on Saturday.

The new power plant will be put into operation in stages from 2020. As expected, its cost will be 14.2 billion dirhams ($ 3.9 billion).

"This strategic project supports the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and ruler of Dubai, in order to ensure the sustainability and transformation of Dubai into an international center of clean energy and green economy," said Said Al Thayer, Managing and Executive Director of Dewa.
