Dubai Joins Oceans International Initiative

The municipality of Dubai has announced its participation in a global initiative aimed at protecting the oceans.

The municipality of Dubai has announced its participation in an initiative to protect the ocean called “Our Big Blue Expedition”. It will be launched at the New Year's Eve celebration in Los Angeles.

The Global Conservation Coalition includes several non-profit environmental organizations, as well as international organizations such as the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA), and the Club of Researchers, an organization of professional scientists.

An honorary member of the Coalition is José Ramos-Horta, Nobel Laureate and former President of East Timor.

Aliya Al Garmoudi, director of the environmental department of the municipality of Dubai, said: "The municipality of Dubai has received an invitation to the event because of its innovative position in protecting the ocean and raising awareness about it."

“We continue to do our best to preserve the Jebel Ali Marine Sanctuary and Dubai's coastal waters, which feature an exemplary biodiversity of unique species of coral and marine fauna ... with representatives such as Dugong and Sea Bissa,” she added.

A delegation of the Municipality, led by Peter Farrington of the Department of the Environment, will take part in this event with a series of paintings reflecting the role and efforts of the department in preserving the marine environment and solving the pollution problem.
