UAE Allocates 258 Million Dirhams to Support Palestinians

On Monday, UAE President Sheikh Khalifa ordered the transfer of nearly 260 million dirhams in support of the Palestinians.

On the eve of the UAE authorities decided to support the Palestinians and transferred 258 million dirhams to support the people. 74 million dirhams will be allocated for the development of the Islamic Wakuf Support Program in Jerusalem to preserve the Arab-Islamic identity of the city. The remaining 184 million dirhams will be sent to the United Nations to help Palestine refugees and organize work in support of education programs in Gaza, where two Palestinians were shot dead on Monday during protests.

The decision to help was announced after the meeting of the League of Arab States in Saudi Arabia last week, convened to discuss the decision of US President Donald Trump to transfer the US Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.

Last week, Saudi King Salman opened the summit, announcing a donation to preserve Islamic heritage in East Jerusalem. The King also called the meeting the "Jerusalem Summit."

"I called this summit in Dahran Jerusalem, so that the whole world remembers Palestine, and that the Arab peoples will always worry about their fate," the King said, adding that "East Jerusalem is an integral part of the Palestinian territories."

Last month, UNRWA (the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East) sought support at the Dubai International Humanitarian Aid Conference and Exhibition after Mr. Trump announced that he would retain more than half of the US funds to the agency.

UNRWA currently provides education for more than 47,000 Palestinian refugees, also providing regular psychosocial support counseling and training on necessary security measures.

It is worth noting that in the period from 2012 to 2107, the UAE allocated 6.2 billion dirhams to help with the Palestinian issue.
