Dubai expat insurance now covers cancer treatment

Dubai experts have unlimited coverage for certain types of cancer.

From January 2019, expats in Dubai with basic insurance packages will receive unlimited coverage for the treatment of three types of cancer and hepatitis C.

According to a senior representative from the Dubai Health Authority (DHA), the holders of the basic package (Essential Benefit Plan, EBP) will be held with 19 dirhams ($ US 5.1) for each health insurance policy in favor of a DHA trust account, which will be used to cover cancer treatment costs for low-wage workers.

The initiative extends to the treatment of cervical, colorectal cancer and breast cancer.

Earlier, owners of EBP were charged a base rate of 550 dirhams ($ US 149). On average, the spending limit was 150 thousand dirhams ($ US 40 thousand) for various types of treatment. For the diseases listed above, in 2019 there will be no limit. Free screening will also be available to patients.

DHA will take a similar hepatitis C screening and treatment initiative in the first quarter of 2019. This step is in line with the World Health Organization's goal of eliminating hepatitis C virus by 2030.

It will also introduce Pay Per Performance (PPP) for lung cancer patients in partnership with a partner organization. If the treatment does not work for a certain time, the partner organization will reimburse all expenses incurred by the patient.
