The first passenger eco-bus in the region stepped on the UAE roads

Masdar launched the first electric bus in the United Arab Emirates.

Masdar from the UAE, in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Department of Transportation, the local bus manufacturer Hafilat Industry and Siemens, officially launched the region’s first all-electric passenger bus onto the capital’s roads. It will serve six stops between Marina Mall, Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station and Masdar City.

The eco-bus will be free until the end of March.

The new bus is designed with the high temperature and humidity in the UAE. These climatic factors are the main obstacle to electric transport. The bus has a lightweight aluminum casing and a unique water cooling system. This helps increase battery life and efficiency. The transport is also equipped with a highly efficient air-conditioning system.

The eco-bus accommodates 30 passengers and can travel up to 150 kilometers on a single charge. Solar batteries are also used to power auxiliary transport systems.

“Launching an eco-bus is an important milestone for the UAE in many ways,” said Yussef Bazelaib of Masdar, “Helping the UAE achieve its sustainable development goals, including sustainable transportation solutions, is Masdar’s core vocation.”
