IN AN INTERVIEW, THE ENGLISH DESIGNER TOLD US ABOUT CREATIVE INSPIRATION AND FAVORITE PLACES IN RIO DE JANEIRO. Interviewed by Karina Matevosyan
How did your collaboration with Havaianas begin?
Honestly, I wore Havaianas flip flops as a kid. Therefore, I always wanted to contribute to the design of this resort shoe.
How much does your Charlotte Olympia brand have in common with the Brazilian Havaianas?
Undoubtedly! Both brands stand for originality, strive to emphasize individuality. And most importantly, the shoe collections from Charlotte Olympia and Havaianas are full of a wide variety of colors and are remembered for their bright and unusual models.
What brings you inspiration?
There are many things on earth that inspire me: travel, people, art, films, fabrics, textures and colors. I like to give my collections a certain mood and give them their unique history. I love to collect beautiful things and ideas for future projects. I would describe my collections as colorful, feminine, nostalgic and necessarily a bit ironic. I am in love with the fashion of the 40s and 50s, and this undoubtedly affects my design.
In terms of history, flip flops are one of the oldest types of shoes. How did this affect your own collection for Havaianas?
That's right, the prototype of Havaianas slippers are Japanese dawns sandals. By the way, the characteristic “rice” pattern on the sole resembles Japanese ancestors. Of course, I was very encouraged by the fact that I could contribute to the history of this ancient shoe.
How would you describe the girl for whom you created this collection of flip flops?
My collection is intended for girls all over the world who want to add a touch of charm, femininity and playfulness to their beach outfit. In general, I like to dress women who, like me, create their image starting with shoes.
Can you identify the main trends in the summer of 2016?
Personally, I was again embraced by a love of leopard color. So in my summer collection expect to see many bright leopard prints!
What do you wear all summer?
I love light dresses - during the day they can be worn with flip flops, and with the sunset, transform the image into an evening one, wearing high-heeled shoes.
