In the UAE capital, parking lots will become “smart”

In the capital of the United Arab Emirates, the service of "smart confiscation" of cars of violators is launched.

On May 22, 2019, Abu Dhabi police announced the launch of a “smart service” to punish violators. From June 1, 2019, all cars that were previously confiscated and sent to municipal penal parking lots will remain with their owners, but under police control.

A similar system has been operating in Dubai since 2017. The car is placed in the parking lot or near the intruder’s house and a small device is installed on it to track and record any movements. It transmits data to the police if the vehicle is set in motion during the confiscation period.

Abu Dhabi police said car owners can pay fines and charges (15 dirhams for each day of punishment) to lift the sanctions. During normal confiscation, the payment was 100 dirhams ($ US 27) for each day the vehicle was in the parking lot.

By law, a car can be confiscated for a variety of reasons: from parking in an inappropriate place to illegally transporting passengers. The period of such withdrawal may be from a week to 90 days. Every day after the penalty period, the owner accumulates additional fines.
