"Patient Faces - My Business Card"

After plastic surgery, people should ask you about the contacts of the spa, not the plastic surgeon, says Dr. MATTEO VIGO (Amwaj Polyclinic). The Italian, preaching natural beauty, explains why huge lips are no longer in trend, how “vampire” methods will help to maintain youth and what celebrity resident of Dubai most like to be like.

When did you decide that being a plastic surgeon is your calling?

I always wanted to be a doctor. This has been my dream since childhood. At the age of 15 I started training: I became a volunteer and learned to provide emergency assistance. Then I went to university, and I still had this idea - to be an ambulance doctor. But I realized that this work is very active and suitable up to a certain age. Say, after 50 it's already hard: a frantic rhythm, night shifts. I decided to change my focus: I was trained in general surgery. But I had an ego, high goals, I wanted to stand out from the rest. And plastic surgery is just that area where a professional can make his name easier.

What operations are your "trump card"?

My main specialization is breast plastic surgery (augmentation, tightening, etc.). When breast augmentation, I work according to a special technique, which allows you to immediately see the future result. Let's just say that I "scan" the patient, and in the virtual reality program a woman can "try on" the implants that we selected. I also perform many other procedures, perhaps everything except rhinoplasty.

What is the main request from local patients, which operations are most popular here?

There are nuances, you need to distinguish between local and expat. Russian patients, for example, are more interested in breast surgery. They are mostly slender, they have no special problems with the figure. Europeans also apply for aesthetic cosmetology procedures (fillers, botox, etc.) But local women, Arab women, often need body contouring. They often have a lot of children, they are not big gym lovers, the flaws, if anything, help to hide the abaya. And at some point, it comes to the point that plastic becomes necessary: liposuction, lipofilling, tummy tuck, arm lift, thigh lift, etc.

Sometimes I see girls with such huge lips that I wonder why the doctor didn’t stop them or convinced that this was too much. You have had situations when you told the patient: "You do not need this, you are already beautiful!"

I had a lot of such situations. I would rather lose a client than do something that would go against my idea of beauty. The faces of my patients are my calling card. Some doctors, for the sake of profit, in order to have more clients, fulfill any whims, I do not. Despite the fact that I have crazy wishes almost every day.

What are the wishes of the clients that baffle you?

Sometimes people ask to change their face in order to look like this or that actress or model. It happens that people with a lot of excess weight want the body of Angelina Jolie. Come on, you have to be realistic! If you weigh 120 kilograms, liposuction will not help - it's a drop in the bucket. First, lose weight, then we'll see. I always try to explain to my patients which option is the most optimal, and not just "did the operation - received the money - bye."

Who do they want to be like? Who is the sample?

Here, in the Arab world, the standard is Kim Kardashian. As for expats, this is a different story: the industry has existed longer, they know more about this area, they read a lot, they study, so it’s easier with Europeans and Americans in this regard - they are more prepared. The Arabs want a momentary effect, an immediate result, so that it is quick and painless, but they do not always understand all the possible nuances and consequences.

What makes you different from other plastic surgeons?

I always answer all patient questions in detail, explain everything, talk about all the subtleties, about implants, why we chose these, I talk about possible complications, how I deal with them. After all, when you do the operation, it’s not a wall to be painted. Man is not a machine, of course, complications can be. The reaction of the body, human habits - everything can play a role. If, for example, we perform an operation that requires a diet after, and a person does not follow it, he gains weight, and the problem resumes. I try to ensure that my patients always thoroughly know all the nuances, so that they understand every step that I take in the operation.

How has the understanding of beauty changed lately? What will be considered beautiful in 2019?

In past years, there was a fashion for the grotesque, excessiveness: big lips, big breasts - to make it stand out, it was noticeable that it was written on the face: "Look, I did a plastic surgery." Now patients want it to be unobvious: "I want more puffy lips, but let them look natural." I always tell patients who come to make faces: “My goal is that after the operation, people who know you say:“ You look so fresh and rested, you were in the spa? ”They should ask for the phone number of the spa, not the plastic surgeon If I achieve this, it means that I did my job well.

How to choose a good surgeon?

It is necessary to know his qualifications, diplomas, learn about his career. Find out if the doctor is a member of an international association. There are various associations, and membership means that the doctor attends conferences, follows the latest innovations in the industry. When you go to the appointment, you should be comfortable with the doctor, you should feel connected with him. Also be sure to ask to see the "before" and "after" photos. I usually don’t publish such pictures on the Internet (especially breast photos), but when patients come to me, they can see everything on my computer. They should know how I understand beauty. Maybe we interpret it differently. If our concepts of beauty diverge, I would prefer it if we separate.

Who do you consider the most beautiful woman?

Jennifer Aniston and Julia Roberts - they look natural, albeit not absolutely perfect. For me it’s ideal - it doesn’t mean beautiful, there must be some peculiarity, something that will attract my attention. Julia Roberts has a huge smile, and it's beautiful, albeit not perfect. Jennifer Aniston's traits are also not 100% perfect, but she is attractive, she is catchy. And I usually say: "Do not come to me to make you beautiful. Beauty is within." Do makeup, hair, dress up - it will give you the feeling that you are beautiful, even more so than Botox and fillers. They certainly help, but this is not a panacea.

Your main care tip: what will help delay a visit to a plastic surgeon?

Sunbathe less, eat right, exercise and always maintain a good mood - this is very important! At a young age, try to minimize invasive procedures, resort to them only when necessary. Start with a minimum.

What procedures can you start with?

Try facial treatments like micronidling or the vampire facial procedure advertised by Kim Kardashian (note. The meaning of the anti-aging procedure is that the patient is taken blood, secrete plasma, enriched with useful elements and applied to the face). In a word, choose procedures that will gently and delicately affect the skin, and do not abuse them while you are young.

"Young" in your understanding - when? At what age do you need to get acquainted with a plastic surgeon?

After 30, you can start to think about it, look for some procedures that are right for you.
