The ballet in two acts on the libretto by Marius Petipa was written by the great Russian composer based on the tale of E. T. A. Hoffmann's The Nutcracker and the Mouse King.

The ballet premiered on December 6, 1892 at the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg.

The Nutcracker occupies a special place among the later works of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky; It stands apart from the tradition of the ballet genre, musical images are innovatively applied. Different editions have different interpretations in the name of the main character: Clara and Marie. In the original work of Hoffmann, the name of the girl is Marie, and Clara is her favorite doll.

The ballet takes place on Christmas Eve in the beautiful house of Dr. Stahlbaum, whose children are eagerly awaiting gifts. One of these presents is the Nutcracker presented by Marie to her godfather, Drosselmeyer. In Maria's wonderful dream - battles with the Mouse king, miracles and the expectation of magic ...

The ballet The Nutcracker draws the viewer's attention to an eternal theme - overcoming evil spells thanks to the power of love.

The music in ballet truly impresses any imagination and gives the audience a rich look. There is not a single fairy-tale work that contained so many masterfully staged dances rich in both visual and musical accompaniment. The aesthetics of the theater are the preservation of the traditions of Russian ballet, in which classical pieces become an expression of an intense spiritual life, a traditionally Russian combination of virtuoso technique with a deep dramatic solution to the role .
